Distributor and WDT tools for a more even espresso puck
Great espresso is built before you ever pull the shot. How evenly your coffee is spread and de-clumped in the basket decides how evenly water flows through it, and that's the difference between a bright, balanced shot and a sour, channelled one. Hypergrind distributor and WDT tools take the guesswork out of puck prep, so every shot starts from the same even, level base.
WDT tools vs distributors: what's the difference?
They solve two different problems, which is why many baristas use both. A WDT tool (Weiss Distribution Technique) uses fine needles to stir inside the coffee, breaking up grinder clumps and spreading grounds evenly throughout the puck, the single most effective step for reducing channelling. A distributor tool works on the surface, levelling and smoothing the top of the bed so your tamp lands flat and even. As a rule of thumb: WDT first to fix the inside, distributor (or tamp) second to finish the top. If you're buying one tool, a WDT tool usually delivers the bigger improvement.
Find your workflow
Our range covers every style and budget. WDT tools run from the simple, stand-equipped everyday model through to the flick-to-extend Hypergrind WDT and the gear-driven Nexus WDT Tool for serious repeatability, all using fine 0.4mm stainless steel needles that de-clump without damaging your basket. Prefer to level the surface? Our distributor tools feature adjustable height and depth markings for repeatable results, while the Gravity Distributor self-adjusts to your dose. Want the complete setup in one purchase? Our WDT & Dosing Ring kits and Tamper & Distributor kits pair the essentials together.
Get the right size
Distributor and WDT tools are matched to your portafilter's internal diameter. As a quick guide: 51mm suits De'Longhi Dedica, SMEG and La Specialista; 53mm suits Breville and Sage machines like the Barista Express and Bambino; and 58mm is the commercial standard for E61, Gaggia Classic, La Marzocco, Sunbeam and KitchenAid. A WDT tool's needles simply need to reach inside your basket, while a distributor should match your basket size to sit flush.
Upgrade your prep today
Better distribution is one of the cheapest, most reliable ways to improve your espresso, no new machine or grinder required. Explore the full Hypergrind range of distributor and WDT tools and build a workflow that gives you the same great shot, every time.
Distributor & WDT Tool FAQs
What does a coffee distributor tool do?
A distributor tool levels and smooths the surface of your coffee grounds in the portafilter before tamping. Resting on the rim and rotated gently across the bed, its base spreads the grounds into a flat, even layer, so your tamp lands level and water flows through the puck more evenly for a balanced extraction.
What is a WDT tool, and how does it work?
WDT stands for Weiss Distribution Technique. A WDT tool uses several fine needles to stir your coffee grounds inside the basket, breaking up clumps caused by grinder static and spreading the coffee evenly throughout the puck. This internal mixing is the most effective single step for reducing channelling and improving shot consistency.
What's the difference between a WDT tool and a distributor, and do I need both?
A WDT tool works inside the coffee to de-clump and mix; a distributor works on the surface to level it before tamping. They fix different problems, so many baristas use both, WDT first, then distribute or tamp. If you only buy one, a WDT tool usually gives the bigger improvement in consistency.
Is a WDT tool worth it?
For most home baristas, yes. Using a WDT tool is one of the cheapest upgrades that noticeably improves espresso, reducing channelling and making shots more consistent and repeatable. It's especially valuable with single-wall or precision baskets and a bottomless portafilter, where even distribution makes a clear, visible difference.
What size distributor or WDT tool do I need?
Match the tool to your portafilter's internal diameter. 51mm suits De'Longhi Dedica, La Specialista and SMEG; 53mm suits Breville and Sage machines like the Barista Express and Bambino; 58mm is standard for E61, Gaggia Classic, La Marzocco, Sunbeam and KitchenAid. A distributor should match your basket size; a WDT tool's needles just need to reach inside.
How do I use a WDT tool?
After dosing your grounds into the basket, insert the needles and stir in small overlapping circles for around ten seconds, working from the base upward until the bed looks even and clump-free. A dosing ring or cup helps keep things mess-free and lets you stir more freely. Then level or tamp as normal.
How do I set the depth on a distributor tool?
Adjustable distributors let you set how deep the base sits by twisting the base of the tool. Set it to lightly level the surface without compressing the coffee too much, then use the side depth markings to return to the same setting each time. Our Gravity Distributor self-adjusts to your dose automatically.
What needle thickness is best on a WDT tool?
Fine needles around 0.3 to 0.4mm are the sweet spot: thin enough to break up clumps and slip between grounds without creating channels, yet strong enough to be durable and gentle on your basket. All Hypergrind WDT tools use 0.4mm stainless steel needles for effective, basket-safe distribution.
Do I need a dosing ring with a WDT tool?
It's not essential, but it helps a lot. A magnetic dosing ring sits on top of your portafilter to contain the grounds, so you can stir more freely without spilling and keep every gram in the basket. Several of our WDT kits pair a tool with a dosing ring for exactly this reason.
What is a gravity (self-levelling) distributor?
A gravity distributor automatically adjusts to the height of your grounds instead of needing a manual depth setting. You simply rest it on the portafilter and rotate, and it levels the bed to suit your dose, a fuss-free option if you want even distribution without dialling in a depth each time.
Can I use these tools with any portafilter or basket?
Yes, as long as the size matches your machine. Distributor and WDT tools work with standard and bottomless portafilters and with both standard and precision baskets. They pair especially well with a bottomless portafilter, since it lets you see the more even extraction your prep is producing.
How do I clean and maintain my distributor or WDT tool?
Wipe or rinse away coffee grounds after use and dry thoroughly to protect the finish. For WDT tools, check the needles stay straight and secure, some of ours include a spare set and an Allen key for easy replacement. Distributors simply need the base kept clean of built-up oils and fines.
